Diana was a symbol of her generation, both a Fashion Icon and Queen in the making. On the cusp of her child's marriage (William) I was asked to created a visual representation of her relationship to Prince Charles.
To begin with research was needed to form a basis and opinion on the relationship; which led to me focusing on the divide which had formed in the relationship between the couple- where she and her husband had to remain seemingly close in public, but in private they rarely interacted and her life wife rife with depression and bulimia, which was portrayed by Diana herself in her famous interview with Martin Bashir.
This dialogue is between Diana and Martin is what formed the foundations to the publication, the two aspects of Diana's life- which could be diluted to her private and public life.
Using the dialogue from the interview a reversible publication was created- allowing the viewer to interact between the two aspects of her life and flipped to read both her private and public emotions. To do so colour played a key part- and those suitable with Diana and her public legacy was Red, whilst in her depths of depression during her private life Black seemed the obvious solution; both of which are also colours apparent throughout the English monarchy.
This reversible publication was then formed into the shape of a crown- to once again reaffirm her regal heritage and her position during the time of the incidents described in the dialogue.
